  • PD3: Scope, or keeping game plans under control

This video offers useful advice on how to help your youth keep the scope of their game reasonable. Making sure your game does not get too large, especially when you are limited in time, can be one of the most difficult things to do.

Some advice on how to help manage scope:

    • Once students have an idea, have them brainstorm several ways to execute that idea to find ones that might be lower in scope.
    • Once they have an idea, have them break their game down into their simplest parts. The five fold framework can be useful here.
    • Once the game is broken down, have the group circle the parts that are must-have for their game, and what is nice-to-have but not necessary. Then, work on the necessary components first.
    • Have students write a plan down for how long something should take, and then have then revisit after some time to make sure it isn’t taking longer. The revisiting may involve cutting items out that are taking too long.
    • Make sure as the facilitator that students don’t feel stuck or that they’ve taken on too much.
